Profession – webmaster
In fact, the webmaster is a very vague concept. After all, in order to create a properly working site, at least three specialists are required: a web programmer (combining programming with site administration), a web designer and a content editor. And in order to prevent their brain drain and “spat” on the world wide web, you also need a marketing and advertising manager.
But such a narrow specialization can be only in large design studios. Basically, the work of the webmaster is similar to the work of the repairman, who does all kinds of work: from sanitary wiring to looping floors. The webmaster should combine in itself not a combination: to be simultaneously a mathematician and an artist, to be able to communicate with the client, to formulate a technical assignment, to program and to possess complex graphic packages. Being talented in everything is a unit of units.

The specialty is this young. And they come to it either programmers who have mastered the basics of design, or designers who mastered web programming. Education, combining these two aspects, does not exist yet, although today in the Moscow institutes (for example, in MIREA) are trying to create faculties of web-mastering. But sooner or later, the creators of the sites will still have to face the need to “disperse through the professions” – within the framework of one education it is very difficult to properly train and design, and not truncate programming.
Today the web master must be able to:
to identify in the conversation with the customer the architecture and logic of the future site, to take into account the wishes regarding design and formulate the technical task;
work with databases (SQL, Postgres, etc.);
to develop the style of the firm (or to maintain an existing one);
work with graphics packages (Photoshop, Corel Draw, Flash, etc.);
place and optimize graphics;
to page the page in html;
debug the site for work in any browser, ensuring compatibility of the codes;
install and configure the appropriate web server and mail server, provide them with protection and stable operation. This requires knowledge of NT + IIS and Unix (FreeBSD, Linux …) + Apache;
to conduct advertising campaigns on the Internet, to be able to work with the main banner networks, to communicate with advertising agencies and advertisers, to negotiate with the administrators of other sites about the mutual exchange of banners and links.
Why a site for the people?
The designer is traditionally the most expensive employee (from $ 800 and above), because his work involves copyright stamp and copyright. Especially if the designer “from scratch” creates the style of the firm. Then all subsequent advertising and printing products will be tied to the style of the site that the designer created. Further on the cost are programming (from $ 600) and content editor (from $ 500). These figures are the initial price, while the “ceiling” may be at overclouded heights.
Both private and studio work with the client on two schemes: the first involves the product of the product and its transfer to the customer, and the second – constant maintenance of the site (support, “promotion”, protection, updating, etc.). The cost of such support from a private webmaster – from $ 100 to $ 300 per month. This money is a “good salary increment” for the webmaster.
